As a member of the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB), the ASSA ABLOY centre of excellence for window hardware in Cheltenham has announced it will be taking part in a pilot recycling initiative, in connection with the CAB Closed Loop Recycling Scheme.
ASSA ABLOY strongly believe that demonstrating sustainability isn’t just about reducing the risks associated with urbanisation, but also improving the long term value of assets.
Aluminium is a “permanent” material, which means that its inherent properties do not change after repeated recycling. In order to keep aluminium in the loop and make the most of its properties, the material must be collected and sorted properly.
As part of this pilot project, all scrap aluminium from the Cheltenham site will be recycled. The scheme will help to generate higher quality aluminium scrap, increasing the value of the mixed metal scrap which the ASSA ABLOY Group is currently generating.
Grant Stratford, Technical Director at Securistyle comments: “We have done some brilliant work towards improving sustainability at our Cheltenham site this year, but we won’t stop here. The CLR Scheme further supports our strategy of demonstrating incremental improvement in both our processes and products with regards to sustainability. The team is focused on continuing to create a more sustainable manufacturing process, as well as committing to a more eco-friendly product offering.
“Not only is it our responsibility to minimise our own environmental impact, but to also set an industry standard and to help our customers do the same.
“Whilst there has always been an economic incentive to recycle aluminium, one of the aims of this scheme is to increase closed loop recycling by encouraging the collecting and sorting of scrap into specific wrought alloy groups.
“The closed loop recycling of construction materials already exists, but it is currently completely voluntary. However, as requirements could be placed on ‘embedded carbon’ content in the near future, it is vital that we as a Group ensure we are increasingly seeking evidence to demonstrate the sustainability credentials of our supply chains.
“Scrap is an important resource and we should be maximising the quantity and quality of recovered aluminium scrap in the UK, building the circular economy of the future.”
An important element of the scheme is the monthly collection of data returns from ASSA ABLOY and other CAB members. All data will be collected in strict confidence and should allow CAB to compile quality data to demonstrate the quantity of aluminium recycling in the UK market.
